It may be from the root ܓ-ܪ-ܕ (ɡ-r-d) related to scraping off, or a wanderwort, close to Akkadian 𒂵𒊑𒁺 (/⁠gāridu⁠/); see Arabic جُرَذ (juraḏ, rat) for more.
