Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yạyŋak (cheek); cognate with Azerbaijani yanaq, Bashkir яңаҡ (yañaq), Southern Altai јаак (ǰaak), Tatar яңак (yañaq), Turkmen ýaňak and Uzbek yonoq.
