[edit]Compare to Persian چلو (čelow, “rice”), itself borrowed from an Indic language, [1]derived from Prakrit.[2] Compare Urdu چاوَل (cāval) / Hindi चावल (cāval, “rice”), Punjabi چَول (caul) / ਚੌਲ (caul), Sindhi چانور (cã̄uru, “grain of rice cleansed from the husk”), and Odia ଚାଉଳ (cauḷô).
