From Middle Persian [script needed] (sydʾ /⁠syā⁠/, black), from Old Persian, from Proto-Iranian *cyaHwáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćyaHwás. Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬌𐬌𐬁𐬎𐬎𐬀 (siiāuua), Sanskrit श्याव (śyāva), Russian сивый (sivyj, grey), Lithuanian šývas (light grey), Old English hīew (whence English hue).
