From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (dwšnʾm /⁠dušnām⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *dušHnā́ma (insult), from Proto-Indo-European *dus- (bad) + *h₁nómn̥ (name). Within Persian, compare دشمن (došman, enemy), نام (nâm, name).
