Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tüt(e)- (to smoke); cognate with Azerbaijani tütmək, Bashkir төтәү (tötəw), Chuvash тӗтӗр (tĕt̬ĕr), Kazakh түтеу (tüteu), Kyrgyz түтөө (tütöö) and Turkmen tütemek.
