Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀢𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀤𑀺 (tappadi), from Sanskrit तप्यति (tápyati, to be hot), from तप् (tap). Cognate with Punjabi ਤਪਣਾ (tapṇā) / تَپݨا (tapṇā), Sindhi تَپَڻُ / तपणु, Gujarati તાપવું (tāpvũ), Marathi तापणे (tāpṇe), Sinhalese තපිනවා (tapinawā).
