Etymology

From Proto-Semitic *śapat- (lip). Compare also Akkadian 𒅻 (šaptum), Classical Syriac ܣܶܦ݂ܬ݁ܳܐ (sep̄ṯā), Ugaritic 𐎌𐎔𐎚 (špt) and Arabic شَفَة (šafa).

שָׂפָה (safáf (dual indefinite שפתיים / שְׂפָתַיִם, plural indefinite שָׂפוֹת, singular construct שְׂפַת־)

  1. (countable) language (a body of words, and set of methods of combining them (called a grammar), understood by a community and used as a form of communication)
  2. (uncountable) Language, speech: choice of words, manner of speech.
  3. Lip: protrusion near the mouth.
  4. Lip: the rim of a container.

Usage notes

  • The plural form שָׂפוֹת is used for languages (whether two or more than two languages). The dual form שְׂפָתַיִם is used for (two or more) lips (the body part).
