Etymology

[edit]

Together with Old Georgian ვაშტი (vašṭi) borrowed from Parthian 𐫇𐫢𐫤 (wšt /wašt/) or Middle Persian 𐫇𐫢𐫤 (wšt /wašt/), past participle of 𐫇𐫡𐫅- (wrd- /ward-/, to turn; to twist, writhe; to return, wander; to change), whence Persian گشتن (gaštan).[1][2] For the sense development compare Persian گشت (gašt, going round; patrol, watch), گشتی (gašti, watchman, patrolman). The suffixed վաշտիկ (vaštik) may be wholly borrowed from Iranian: compare the mentioned Persian گشتی (gašti).
