Inherited from Old East Slavic агнѧ (agnę), ꙗгнѧ (jagnę) + -ёнок (-jónok), from Proto-Slavic *agnę, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʷn-, the stem of *h₂egʷnós. Compare а́гнец (ágnec).
