Mongolian

Pronunciation

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

Seemingly specific to Khalkha, most other Mongolic languages (including dialects of Inner Mongolian) use the cognate of умбах (umbax, to dive).

Perhaps a corrupted form of Proto-Mongolic *selbi-, compare Buryat һэлихэ (helixe, to row).

Compare also the name of Selenge river, attested since Old Turkic times.

Verb

[edit]

сэлэх (selex) (Mongolian spelling ᠰᠡᠯᠢᠬᠦ (selikü))
