Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠰᠠᠶᠢᠳ sg (sayid, minister), from Middle Mongol ᠰᠠᠶᠢᠳ pl (sʾyyt /⁠sayid⁠/, good, attributive and substantive adjective). Compare Buryat һайд (hajd), Kalmyk сәәд (sääd), etc. Perhaps related to Arabic سَيِّدٌ m (sayyidun, master; lord; sir).
