From Proto-Mordvinic *päšťə, from Proto-Finno-Permic *päškɜ. Cognates include Erzya пеште (pešťe), Finnish pähkinä, Eastern Mari пӱкш (pükš) and Udmurt пашпу (pašpu, hazelnut bush).
