Borrowed from French pseudonyme, from Ancient Greek ψευδώνυμος (pseudṓnumos), from ψευδής (pseudḗs, false) and ὄνυμα (ónuma), from ὄνομα (ónoma, name). Compare Russian псевдони́м (psevdoním), Belarusian псеўдані́м (psjeŭdaním), Polish pseudonim.
