Per Vasmer, probably inherited from Proto-Slavic *plъtьnъ, from Proto-Slavic *plъtь (whence Russian плоть (plotʹ, flesh)); compare Slovene póltǝn (carnal, corporeal) (tonal orthography). By surface analysis, плоть (plotʹ) +‎ -ный (-nyj).
