Inherited from Old East Slavic копити (kopiti, to amass, to gather, e.g. people for an army), from Proto-Slavic *kopiti (to stack, to pile, e.g. hay), from *kopa (heap, pile), from *kopati, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kop-, probably ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (to strike, beat).
