[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kanjukъ / *kanjakъ, from *kaňa, from Proto-Indo-European *kōnyā or *kan- (“to sing”), whence also Proto-Germanic *hanô (“rooster, cock”), Proto-Germanic *hanjō (“hen”) (whence English hen), Latin cicōnia (“stork”), Latin canō (“to sing”), Welsh canu, Ancient Greek καναχέω (kanakhéō).
