Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *zatъxlъ. Per Vasmer, a variant of за́дхлый (zádxlyj). By surface analysis, за- (za-) +‎ дох(ну́ть) (dox(nútʹ), to breathe) +‎ -лый (-lyj). Also related to ту́хлый (túxlyj).
