[edit]Probably from e-vocalism of Proto-Indo-European *gew- (“to curl, to coil”), akin to dialectal Bulgarian гу́я (gúja, “serpent”) and possibly Bulgarian жу́жел (žúžel, “snail”). Compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian гу̀јавица (“earthworm”).
