Etymology

Of substrate origin (Thracian?), cognate/related to Romanian groapă (hole, pit), Albanian gropë (pit). Probably ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrep-, a variant of *gʰrebʰ- (to scoop). Doublet of гроб (grob, grave).
