Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Middle Russian барышъ (baryš, factor's commission; trade profit) attested since 1568, through Old Ruthenian барышъ (baryš) (since 1539) or directly from Ottoman Turkish بارش (peace; reconciliation, agreement) (whence Turkish barış (peace)). Anikin quotes Strakhov, who suggests borrowing through 16th-century horse trade jargon.

Historical hypotheses include Chuvash *парӑш (*parăš, gift) and varış, from the verb varmak (to arrive, come).
