From баба (baba, grandmother, old woman) +‎ Russian Яга́ (Jagá). Second element preserved in dialects as native енза́ (enzá, ulcer, infection) (with progressive palatalization of *-g- after ). Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *baba ęga.
