Borrowed from Mongolic, either Written Oirat ᠠᠯᡐᠠᡅ (altai) or Classical Mongolian ᠠᠯᠲᠠᠢ (altai), in turn from Old Turkic 𐰞𐱃𐰆𐰣𐰖𐰃𐰽 (l¹t¹un¹y¹is¹ /⁠altun yïš⁠/).
