From Proto-Hellenic *pʰégʷomai, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰégʷeti, from *bʰegʷ-. Cognates include Sanskrit अभिभजते (abhibhajate), Lithuanian bė́gti, Proto-Slavic *běgati (to flee, run), Albanian boj, and perhaps Tocharian A pkänt.
