Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *lewotrón, whence also Mycenaean Greek 𐀩𐀺𐀵𐀫 (re-wo-to-ro /⁠lewotrón⁠/), from Proto-Indo-European *léwh₃trom (that which is used for washing), from *lewh₃- (to wash, bathe); see there for further cognates. Equivalent to λούω (loúō) +‎ -τρον (-tron).
