Etymology

[edit]

Traditionally compared to Latin calix (deep bowl, cup) but a variation *a/u is unknown in Indo-European words. For the same reason, κάλυξ (kálux, husk) is not identical with this word. The presence of the variation leads to a Pre-Greek origin, as well as the typical Pre-Greek suffix -ικ-.
