A Messapic word like βρένδος (bréndos, deer), possibly also found in place names like Βρεντέσιον (Brentésion, Brindisi). Further possible cognates are Latvian briedis (deer), Old Prussian braidis (elk), Elfdalian brinde (elk) and Albanian bri (horn, antler).
