Cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐁁𐀲𐀫 (ai-ta-ro), from Proto-Hellenic *áitʰalos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eydʰ- (fire). Compare Albanian jezull (cloud of dust or smoke; ashes) and Proto-Germanic *ailą (fire).
