Formally from Δαρεῖος (Dareîos, King Darius) +‎ -ικός (-ikós, adjective suffix), but possibly a popular etymological remodelling of an Old Persian word related to 𐎭𐎼𐎴𐎹 (d-r-n-y /⁠daraniya-⁠/, gold).
