From the verb ýyldyramak (to sparkle, shine), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *yaltïr- (to flash; blazed). Cognate with Azerbaijani ildırım (lightning, thunder), Turkish yıldırım (thunderbolt, lightning), etc.
