Etymology

From Middle English tobursten, tobresten, from Old English tōberstan (“to burst asunder, shatter”), from Proto-West Germanic *tebrestan, *tuʀbrestan, *twiʀbrestan, from Proto-Germanic *twizbrestaną (“to break in two, burst asunder”), equivalent to to- (“apart”) +‎ burst. Cognate with Old Saxon tebrestan, German zerbersten.
