[edit]Sino-Vietnamese word from 過渡, composed of 過 (“to cross”) and 渡 (“to cross a river”), with the modern sense from Japanese 過渡 (kato, “transition”). Doublet of qua đò (“to cross a river on a boat”). See also quá giang.
