Borrowed from Anglo-Norman paroche, from Late Latin parochia, from Ancient Greek παροικίᾱ (paroikíā, a dwelling abroad), from πάροικος (pároikos, neighboring, foreigner), from παρά (pará, beside) + οἶκος (oîkos, house).
