[edit]From Proto-Finnic *meci (“honey”), from Proto-Finno-Ugric *mete, which is probably borrowed from Proto-Indo-European *médʰu (whence English mead), or more specifically from Pre-Proto-Indo-Iranian.[1] Cognates include Erzya медь (meď), Hungarian méz.
