Etymology
[edit]Compound of mā- (combinatory form of -mēy (“hand”)) + kwi (“to take”) + -l (passive nominalization). Compare Classical Nahuatl mācuīlli (“five”). From Proto-Nahuan *ma:kwil, from Proto-Uto-Aztecan *manniki. Probably cognate with Yaqui mamni (“five”) and Shoshone manegite (“five”).
