[edit]From Middle Dutch keer, kere, ultimately a derivative of Dutch keren (“to turn around, revolve”). Compare German Low German Kehr (“time, turn”), German Kehr (“turn, direction”), Old English ċierr ("turn, time, occasion"; > English chore).
