Etymology

[edit]

From kīņd̦õļi (teary (eyed)) +‎ (month). The meaning of kīņd̦õl is either a tear or a candle. In the adjectival form, with a soft ⟨ļ⟩, it means specifically "teary (eyed.)" February the 2nd is sometimes observed as "Candle day" (with roots in Latvian mythology), perhaps kīņd̦õļ is a variant of kīņd̦õl in the candle sense, not a shortening of kīņd̦õļi.
