[edit]From Old Scots forȝelde, from Middle English forȝelden, from Old English forġieldan (“to pay for; repay; requite”), equivalent to for- + yeild. Cognate with English foryield, Saterland Frisian ferjäilde (“to repay”), Dutch vergelden (“to reward; recompense; requite; reciprocate”), German vergelten (“to repay; requite; reward”).
