From Old Scots forȝelde, from Middle English forȝelden, from Old English forġieldan (to pay for; repay; requite), equivalent to for- +‎ yeild. Cognate with English foryield, Saterland Frisian ferjäilde (to repay), Dutch vergelden (to reward; recompense; requite; reciprocate), German vergelten (to repay; requite; reward).
