[edit]Ultimately from Latin alphabētum, from Byzantine Greek ἀλφάβητον (alphábēton) from the accusative of Koine Greek ἀλφάβητος (alphábētos) from Ancient Greek ἄλφα (álpha, “alpha”) + βῆτα (bêta, “beta”).
