Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *eśetis (whence also Latvian ecêšas, Old Prussian aketes, Proto-Slavic *esetь (grain rack)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂oḱetis, a variant of *h₂oḱ-et-eh₂ (harrow), itself perhaps a derivative of *h₂eḱ- (sharp). Direct cognates include Ancient Greek ὀξίνα f (oxína, ox-drawn implement with iron teeth), Latin occa (harrow), Old English eġeþe (id), Cimbrian égata (id), Cornish oges (id), Welsh oged (id).[1]
