Thanks and a request

[edit]

I think I prefer this list to the one of my own that I've been using for years. The only improvement that comes to mind now would be to include occurrences of taxlinked terms from Translingual entries, which seem to be excluded. This would have short-term value in the Translingual orphan-adoption effort. @This, that and the other DCDuring (talk) 02:27, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@DCDuring thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you find this list valuable. In fact, I had actually forgotten about it! The automated todo list infrastructure just happily does its thing twice a month without any intervention.
As for the issue at hand, you have correctly deduced that I put in a condition excluding taxlinked terms in Translingual entries, but I have no recollection of why I did so. I'm now executing a dry run of this list with the condition removed, based on the same dump as the list currently on the page, so it will be clearly possible to see the difference. Maybe then I will understand why I put that condition in place! This, that and the other (talk) 06:16, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@DCDuring the experimental new list is at User:This, that and the other/wanted taxa without Translingual exclusion. You can view a cross-page diff to see how they differ: https://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?oldid=82606551&diff=82739707
Do you prefer one version or the other? This, that and the other (talk) 11:20, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot. I definitely prefer the one with Translingual wants. Some ranks like "tribe" and "superfamily" do not have any vernacular names, but are useful, forming more reasonably sized groups of hyponyms thereunder, which helps a bit with de-orphaning. The listing without Translinguals had 3 tribes, the one with had more than a hundred. DCDuring (talk) 16:18, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@DCDuring thanks for the feedback. I'll remove the Translingual exclusion for good, then. This, that and the other (talk) 00:43, 25 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@DCDuring just letting you know that there is some bug with Wikimedia dumps at present. The page has been refreshed but clearly the underlying data is stale. This, that and the other (talk) 11:01, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for letting me know. There still seem to be plenty of entries worth adding! DCDuring (talk) 13:31, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Why is it that, of the ~20 blue links on this list (a tiny %), more than half are entries that have been around more than six months, some for a decade? Does your program for generating this rely on something (eg, a list of links or categories) in the database that is updated effectively randomly so that, inevitably, some items may never be updated? It does not have any negative effect worth worrying about on the value of the run, but it reminds me of some of my experiences with large search-box searches as well as dump runs I've done. I would settle for your best guess. DCDuring (talk) 00:29, 13 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

My best guesses are (a) exactly as you say, something in the DB has not been updated, or (b) there is something unusual or quirky about the formatting of those pages. Can you point me to a couple, @DCDuring? This, that and the other (talk) 06:39, 13 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Of 22 blue links:
A: 4 have nomul=1 because there is an entry, but not a taxonomic entry.
B: 4 were added after Dec. 3
C: 3 were added earlier in 2024: Andropogon gerardii (misspelling of A. gerardi), Hyaena brunnea (redirect), Potentilla anserina (syn.)
D: 4 were added by SB in 2005: Eukaryota, Odontoceti, Mysticeti, Corvida
E: 7 were added 2015-2018: Microsporales, Chlorococcales, Neoophora, Holothyrida, Parahyaena, Actinomyces, Monogenea
A and B are expected; C could easily be attributed to a lag in updating something, but actually involved redirects, errors, and synonyms; D & E are harder to explain, D entries approaching 20 years in Wiktionary. @User:This, that and the other DCDuring (talk) 15:03, 13 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
