Usage
[edit]This template may be used on the entry pages of English verbs to create a table of conjugated forms of English verbs. It also supports all irregular verbs with manual parameters. In general, it should only be used for verbs with archaic forms; otherwise the headword is sufficient.
Parameters
[edit]For irregular verbs, parameters may be constructed by indicating tense and person/mood. For example, past_2sg
indicates the second person past form, and pres_ptc
indicates the present participle. A tense and person/mood must always be specified, using one from each of the following lists:
- Tense
-
pres
: present tensepast
: past tense
- Person/mood
-
1sg
: first person2sg
: second person3sg
: third personpl
: pluralsub
: subjunctiveimp
: imperativeptc
: participle
As a special case, the past forms may be all specified together:
past
Archaic and obsolete forms
[edit]Archaic or obsolete second-person forms (ending in -est and -edst) and third-person singular forms (ending in -eth) may be indicated by the parameter |old=1
.
Missing forms
[edit]If a verb is defective, using the argument -
will omit that form from the table.
Additional forms
[edit]Additional forms of a particular type may be specified by appending a number to the parameter (e.g. pres_2sg2
). Up to four forms are supported.
Additionally, archaic/obsolete forms may be specified by appending _old
(e.g. pres_1sg_old
). As with all manually specified forms these will take priority, so they will overwrite any forms generated by old=1
. A second archaic/obsolete form may be specified by appending _old2
.
Qualifiers and footnotes
[edit]Qualifiers may be added by using any paramter with _qual
appended (e.g. past_pl_qual
or pres_3sg_old2_qual
). These appear in-line, in a similar fashion to definition labels (e.g. (colloquial)). However, they will automatically be incorporated into the archaic/obsolete footnote if the arguments archaic
or obsolete
are used.
If you wish them to appear in footnotes, giving the arguments note1
, note2
or note3
will instead place a footnote marker next to the form. You must then also use the parameter note1
, note2
or note3
to specify what the footnote says. This is useful if several forms would have the same label, or the label is too long to comfortably fit in a cell.
