Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from the first English translation by C. K. Scott Moncrieff and Stephen Hudson (pseudonym; Sydney Schiff) of Marcel Proust's work À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time, 1913–1927), known as Remembrance of Things Past (1st edition, 1922–1931, 7 volumes). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the works at the Internet Archive:

1st edition (1922–1931)
  • Volume I (Swann's Way, 1922, 2 parts).
  • Volume II (Within a Budding Grove, 1924, 2 parts).
  • Volume III (The Guermantes Way, 1925, 2 parts).
  • Volume IV (Cities of the Plain, 1927, 2 parts).
  • Volume V (The Captive, 1929).
  • Volume VI (The Sweet Cheat Gone, 1930).
  • Volume VII (Time Regained, 1931).
Uniform edition (1941)
  • Volume I (Swann's Way, part I).
  • Volume II (Swann's Way, part II).
  • Volume III (Within a Budding Grove, part I).
  • Volume IV (Within a Budding Grove, part II).
  • Volume V (The Guermantes Way, part I).
  • Volume VI (The Guermantes Way, part II).
  • Volume VII (Cities of the Plain, part I).
  • Volume VIII (Cities of the Plain, part I).
  • Volume IX (The Captive, part I).
  • Volume X (The Captive, part II).
  • Volume XI (The Sweet Cheat Gone).
  • Volume XII (Time Regained):

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |edition=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the uniform edition (1941), specify |edition=uniform. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1922–1931).
  • |year=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from a particular printing of a volume (when the first printing is not currently available online), use this parameter to specify the printing year.
  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=VII in the 1st edition, and from |volume=I to |volume=XII in the uniform edition.
  • |2= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from, if not indicated by the template.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
