To reach the end of one's tether

What does this expression mean? Where does it come from? Thanks to anyone who can help. PhS 08:27, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

(too late to be useful?) It means exactly what it says. When an animal reaches the end of the rope by which it is tethered, it can't go any further. By analogy, when a person cannot go any further (often emotionally), they are said to be "at the end of their tether". We have an entry for this expression at at_the_end_of_one's_tether. verb sense 3

i think sense 3 is just the same as sense 1. sense 1 seems "bad" and sense 3 seems "good", but the way i see it is that in both cases, the connection is secure and unbreakable, so instead of bad and good we're talking about security. —Soap— 21:25, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
