Is million really a number? I think that the number is one million (two millions, etc) and million is just a noun. When we say "millions of ... people/cats/questions ..." aren't we using it as a noun? --flyax 08:39, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

OED calls this a "countable determiner"! Also see The Integration of Million Into the English System of Number Words: A Diachronic Study, by Donald Sims MacQueen. DCDuring TALK 15:48, 7 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
@DCDuring Can you send me a copy of "The Integration of MILLION into the English System of Number Words"? Thnx --Backinstadiums (talk) 08:56, 19 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
It seems OED may have changed its classification. The online version currently classes it as an adjective (as in "sixteen million Africans") and a noun (as in "a million of men", or "several million were displaced"). Calling it a "numeral", as we currently do, seems wrong for the reasons flyax gave above. It can serve as the head of a numeral (like "one million", or "twelve million and one"), but it can't stand alone as a numeral. Colin M (talk) 22:24, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

The mass of people

[edit]

Chambers 1908 includes "the million", defined as "the great body of the people generally", i.e. the masses. Equinox 17:14, 15 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

The seventh digit to the left of the decimal point in the decimal number system In the number 7,654,321, the 7 is in the millions place. JMGN (talk) 16:03, 10 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not a separate sense. Just how one writes numbers. Same for "tens" etc. Equinox 16:04, 10 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
