Is the etymology as "by God" verified? I have always assumed it to be a reference to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_George (or, on the outside, one of the kings by the same name). Notably, making oaths or cursing based on the names of various saints, apostels, or Mary ("mother of God") has been a common habit in many countries and eras. 188.100.199.10 10:27, 31 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
