Chambers 1908 definition

[edit]

Rather confusing: "Properly the same as counter-tenor, the male voice of the highest pitch (now principally falsetto), and not the lowest female voice, which is properly contralto, though in printed music the second part in a quartet is always called alto." Equinox 18:56, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Adjective?

[edit]

"Nouns often modified by "alto": saxophone, clarinet, flute, recorder, part, solo, voice, singer."

If "alto" modifies nouns, why isn't it listed as an adjective for those uses?
