In fruit

[edit]

For pits in fruit, the only meaning I know is the shell surrounding the seed; a seed without a shell is not a pit. Thus one speaks of a cherry pit or a peach pit, but not an orange pit or an apple pit. Can you cite examples otherwise? -PierreAbbat 01:54, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Pits and bits

[edit]

Regarding the "armpit" sense: I have occasionally encountered "pits and bits", meaning armpits and genitals, i.e. the simplest possible wash without taking a proper shower. It's on the very brink of CFI-attestability. Equinox 01:15, 16 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Pits in Fruit

[edit]

Back in 2005, mention was made of the pit of fruit. It hasn't yet been added to the definitions. Merriam-Webster defines pit as "the stone of a drupaceous fruit." I think this meaning should be added to the Wiktionary definitions. TepeyacLady (talk) 23:14, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
