Etymology
[edit]@ZxxZxxZ: Could you help fill out the etymology? --WikiTiki89 19:38, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
- Persian has also the form گنجه (ganje/ganja, “an old kind of closet”), but I can't find attestation in classical works. However, the city name Ganja (Azerbaijan) is an old Persian name. The name is reflected in Arabic sources as janza. --Z 20:54, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
- @ZxxZxxZ: Thanks. Is there any form you know of with a vowel between the n and the z (or j)? --WikiTiki89 21:14, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
- No, there's no such word in Persian. The Hebrew word reminds of Arabic خَزِينَة (ḵazīna) < x-z-n < *x-n-z, ultimately from Iranian *ganza-. Arabic sometimes creates roots from loanwords and create new words based on that root, but I guess this is not the case for other Semitic languages. --Z 08:49, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
- @ZxxZxxZ: No that is the case. It's just that the root is not borrowed directly, but usually one word is borrowed first and then the root is extracted from it. I just wanted to know whether this word could have been a direct borrowing or whether it must have been formed from the root. --WikiTiki89 14:33, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
