Etymology

[edit]

From Old Frisian sand, from Proto-Germanic *samdaz. Cognates include West Frisian sân.

Noun

[edit]

Sön m or n (plural Sönen) (Sylt)

  1. sand
  2. sandbank, sandy area, sands

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Sylt Frisian, like the other dialects, orginally distinguished between neuter (sense 1) and masculine (sense 2). With the frail gender system, however, this distinction seems to have been lost. The word is now predominantly masculine in both senses.
